SQL Server CE, oops, mobile, oops, Compact Edition, released
. This one went thru a name change or two.
This is a product that I (we) could have done with 3-4 years ago. It’s a small (1.7meg) SQL compliant database, which runs on XP/Vista/2003, and CE-based devices (Windows Mobile, CE, Smartphone et al).
In my recent past (Orbiz), we used SQL CE 2.0 and 3.0 (as it was called at the time). I even wrote a basic Object-Relational Mapping engine over the top, to try to abstract it out (so we could use SQL CE or normal SQL).
SQL CE 3 was, I think, rebranded with SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition or something. But even then, it was only for Windows CE / Mobile / Smartphone and Tablet PC. Microsoft used it internally in Media Center (unofficially). Noone else could tho. Until now
So, now I dont think anyone has any excuse for not using a SQL database for any application – from Smartphone to Click-once deployed desktop. Makes writing offline, cached-data scenario applications easy. Replication against a full SQL Server is supported, which makes it easy to get data back from people offline on the road.
Time to have another play, I think. Could make small web apps really really easy to deploy (it doesn’t need installation).
Now playing: Novaspace – Run to You (Burn Out Mix)
