the tube
The London Underground still fascinates me. The fact I can walk for 15 mins (2 on the bus), go underground, and pop up on the other side of town in about 45 mins (or the middle of town in 20) if lovely. I guess I haven’t been here long enough to be complaining about the service, tho personally, the train turns up, I get on. Late isn’t really a relevant term, and the longest I’ve had to wait is about 20 mins (once). In Paris, they only come every 15-20 mins.
One thing I wanted was a good map of where everything is, relative to things above ground. The stock map isn’t much good – some of the stations which look close aren’t, and some which are about a 15 second ride apart look about the same distance away (Charing Cross to Embankment).
So, in steps Google Maps and someone’s mash up.
This mash up is really well done. The lines are all drop-shadowed, it’s easy to read and use, and it shows where things are really well. Someone should really do a REAL one of these (ie, on paper). Or on the iPhone. Ups to emcon for the original article. There is also this map, which is mostly the same as the official one, but has curved lines.

The iPhone tube-map is something i’m very seriously considering for my first attempt at using the SDK.
I’ve been here for 2 months now and I’m still struggling to find my way to the center of town via tube.
Speaking of the tube and the iPhone. If you don’t know this one yet, you should check it out: http://www.mindtheapp.com/tubes/ (iPhone or Safari only)
