Hop 1 – Blue Lake Ranch, Colorado

After a slightly hungover start, thanks to “not a big night” with friends before we left, we set out for hop 1 on our trip. From Heathrow – with Giraffes in our Bloody Marys – we flew to Denver, which wasn’t too bad, and then on Barney, the unpainted plane (“she flys great, just needs a lick of paint”) to Durango, which is about an hour south of Denver.

This is our second time in Durango. We came here in January with Bendan Nicholls’ on The Colorado Mystery Tour. This time we wanted to see it without four feet of snow outside, and it really is beautiful. The place we are staying – which we stayed last time too – is The Blue Lake Ranch. It’s a bed and breakfast inn about twenty minutes west of Durango, and it’s one of – if not THE – nicest places I’ve ever stayed in. The natural location is mind blowingly beautiful, and the lodge and people are wonderful.

One of the first things which struck me when we got here was the noise. Or rather, compared to London, the lack of noise. The only thing we could hear on the balcony last night was the sound of frogs (we think) and insects. I haven’t heard that since we left NZ – cities, and even outside cities in the UK, are pretty void of wildlife noises, even when you remove the vehicle noise.

The next few days consists of helping a friend with a small project he needs doing, and then some sightseeing around the 5000+ year-old Anastazi and local Indian sites like Mesa Verde. There is an emense sense of history and time in this place, way more so than New Zealand, and even more so than Europe.

Hrmm, must be about breakfast time. Damn jetlag. :)
