I got one (would you have expected anything less from me?).
I use it a lot at work (now architecting for the devil – think blue logo, two letters, your old computer was made by them) In meetings it’s great – and with the little dongle thing for bluetooth it talks to the projector on the ceiling. I naturally had to ‘jailbreak’ it, then I could install apps that allow me to read/edit MS word docs and the like… Dont do much ‘media’ stuff on it (except using apple remote and another remote program to control my pioneer amp, apple tv etc) at home

The only convincing argument I have seen for the iPad (without looking very hard) is from Seth Godin, about how iPad's could radically transform meetings. As you know I am giddy with anticipation at the new 4G/whatever they call it iPhone.

@Nahum yeah. If I hadn’t got my mother a netbook last year, and if she used the ‘net more, I’d get her one and an external keyboard. It’d be perfect for a small amount of surfing and email, which is mostly what she does.

My theory is that we are not the target market. Us geeks have been calling for an iTablet and apple delivered one, just not for us – which explains the backlash against it from geeky apple fans.

It’s aimed at people who mostly just surf like my mother-in-law.

@Jm I guess my point is I dont need another device. The lappie and the iphone do the job well enough – so I can use the £500 for something else (eg a new iPhone ). Idealy, I’d like one device that I can put in my pocket and walk off with (ala iPhone) AND run VM’s on for work. But thats asking too much at the moment I think.

If someone said “here, have an iPad”, I’d take it – no argument there. And if I was writing an app for it, I’d need to get one, but until then….

@TomMoore: Then my response would be: HELL YES. Unqualified yes. Absolutely. I know people who work like this, and for a while, I was one of those people. I would have loved to have an iPad for that. I’d would have been in the queue for one with everyone else.

But at the moment (and for the foreseeable future) I’m not one. So for me, now, thats not a reason to get one. But it sounds like you are

Give the iPad more than a demo at a store and you’ll be convinced. It ends up taking a lot of tasks from both the iPhone and a laptop which it can do better. Also, battery life and instant on is great.
